Y5 and Y6 Girls' Football League Match Vs. Thorpedene

On Thursday 30th March the girls had their final league match. In the previous two league games we have drawn and we wanted to complete the season unbeaten! We knew Thorpedene would be a tough team to play against; which they were. The first half extremely tough as they had most of the possession, scoring after 10 minutes, to make it 1-0. We slowly got into the game and just before half time we were awarded a penalty - Isabelle stepped up (being very brave) and finished it with ease. The second half was much closer but just when both teams thought it would be a draw, with 15 seconds left on the clock, Thorpedene's keeper took a goal kick and Gracie managed to get to the ball first, took a touch, and shot straight at goal. It slowly trickled in which made the final score 2-1.

We had to wait to see if we made it to the final at Roots Hall, relying on other results. Unfortunately, Darlinghurst beat Sacred Heart by more then 1 goal and finished above us on goal difference.

All the girls should be really proud of their performances this year and we hope they continue playing next year at St. Mary's or at their new secondary school. no

Friday 17th 2016 B/C Match Bournes Green

On Friday 17th March we played an B/C Football match against Bournes Green. It was a good experience for the boys because some of them have never played a football match before. Both matches were played in good spirit. The B team won their game 3-0 with some amazing football and incredible saves from our goalkeeper Asher (Octopus). The C team match was a lot closer but the boys kept pushing and pushing for the first goal and we finally scored with a smashing finish from Ronnie making the final score 1-0. Well done to all the boys and we hope they continue to hard work.

Thursday 16th Year 3 and 4 friendly

On Thursday 16th March the Year 3 & 4s played against Westborough. No one could be too sure how it was going to play out because our the Year 3 and 4s have not had any training together or  match time. I believed the boys were good enough to win the game. It was a game of two halves! The first half we were dominant with some really good passing and combined team effort. When the first half was over we were winning 4-1. The second half we were still playing really well but Westborough stepped up their games and started playing better and managed to get a goal back making it 4-2. It was a tough second half; we were pushed back into our own half but then went on to the counter attack and then ended up scoring making it 5-2 and killing the game off. Really well done to all boys - Louis, Leo, Clayton, Aaron, Elliot, Tash, George, Enes and Rocco

Thursday 9th March Girls Match

On Thursday 9th March the girls played a league match against  Darlinghurst. We knew Darlinghurst were a really good team and that we would need to work really hard; in our first game we drew against Sacred Heart so wanted to carry on not slip. It was a very close game - they were a very physical team  and the girls worked really hard with some excellent passing. The improvement with the girls from their first ever training together is amazing. The final score finished 2-2 with Hayley scoring both and some amazing saves from Phoebe. Well done to all the girls you should all be very proud - Phoebe, Nadia, Molly, Libby, Hayley, Gracie, Harli and Megan.

Sport:  Away Y5/6 Football Matches Vs. Friars - 24.11.16

A squad of seventeen children played two matches against Friars.

Match 1

Friars 0 - 2 St. Mary's

Another clean sheet and two goals from Liam secured our first win of the league campaign this year. The team created a number of chances and we probably deserved more goals. The team included: Daniel, Josh, Ben A, William, Saul, Steven, Liam, Iqbary and Musa.  no

Match 2

Friars 1 - 5 St. Mary's

This was an outstanding performance considering many children were playing their first competitive match. A superb hat-trick from Callum and further goals by Joseph, who also played well, secured a fine result for the team. Well done to all the players: Asher (aka the OctopusImage result for the octopus), Ben, Patrick, Ronnie, Harley and Jacob. no

Well done to Callum, Ben, Liam, William, Steven, Saul, Raul, Iqbary and Musa.

Sport:  3 Tees Cricket KS1

On Friday 1st July 2016 we took part in a 3 Tees 2 cricket competition. This is a more advanced version than 3 Tees:

  • The first batter hits all three balls off the tees.
  • The fielding team have to wait until all three balls have been hit.
  • As soon as the three balls have been hit, the fielders have to quickly get the tees back in place with the balls on top.
  • While the fielders are tidying up, the batter runs between two markers.  Their team help them to count how many times they have run between the spots.

Six Year 2s were chosen. They had played 3 Tees in PE but have never played 3 Tees 2. On Thursday at lunchtime, the team had a 20 minute practice of 3 Tees 2 and they grasped it really well. On Friday we went to the competition at Shoeburyness High School; there were 2 pitches with 3 teams on each pitch. On our pitch first was Hamstel. It was a close game and we drew with them. On our next game we played Bournemouth Park, again this was a close game but we were confident and the children played really well and we won. Then we got through to the semi Finals. The children were brilliant and achieved the highest amount of runs on that day with a massive 67 runs. Then we played the final which we knew would be tough game. We played Heycroft and it was a close game; we managed 46 runs but unfortunately Heycroft scored two extra runs - 48 in total. We came second and the top 2 go to the finals in Billericay on Wednesday 13th July, where 14 of the best 3 Tee’s schools in Essex go against each other. I am so proud of all 6 of them and they should be very proud of their performance. A Massive well done to Abigail, Archie, Max, Kaif, Lois and Esther. Now we can look forward to the finals!

Sport:  Group 2 Borough Sports

On Wednesday 22nd July 2016, a squad of 67 children competed at the Group 2 Borough Sports at Garon Park. After winning promotion to Group 2 this year, the squad produced a tremendous performance to achieve 1st place in the field events, 3rd place on the track and joint 2nd overall. This is St. Mary's highest ever finish and shows the progress we are making towards our goal of reaching Group 1 in the next two years.

Photos and a full report from Lucia, our reporter, will follow...

I am immensely proud of each and every pupil who took part in training for the Borough Sports this year. smileyno

Mr. Jolly

Sport:  KS1 Cross Country

On the 11th May 2016 , St Mary's won the KS1 Borough Cross Country competition. Twenty-three children took part. Our athletes won three of the four races, with nine children finishing in the Top Ten. A tremendous achievement following nine months of training. Many congratulations to our gold medallists: Praise Adebayo, Faith Adebayo and Jayden Lloyd. All the children ran great races, which is why, overall, we are Borough Champions.

Sport:  Hi 5 Netball

A mixed group of 9 children took part in a competition at Garon Park during the week commencing 18 March 2016.

Mrs Abbott and Mrs Shepherd both commented on the team spirit and perseverance shown by the squad against some very established netball teams. Well done to: Tommy, India-Mae, Ethan, Chelsea, Nadia, Keira, Florence, Phoebe and Hayley.

You were all a credit to the school and we are very proud of you all.

Sport: Year 5 and 6 football

On Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th March 2016 the Year 5 and 6 boys' football team played two league matches. On Tuesday we won 5-1 against Milton Hall. The football we played in the first half was the best I have seen this year! On Wednesday we played Westborough at home and drew 1-1. It was an unfortunate result as we hit the post and the bar on a number of occasions. Credit to Westborough who battled and fought for the draw. As the football season is now closing, I must congratulate all the children who have trained this year and represented St. Mary's. Well done to: Louis, Zac, Callum T, Finley, Theo, Leon, Saul, Steven, William, Ethan, Riley, Mitchell, Ronnie, Liam M, Liam B, Tommy, Elliot, Daniel L, Ben L, Samuel, Ronnie, Jack S, Ben A  and, of course, Mr. Woolf who has trained the team brilliantly this year. After the Easter holidays, Friday's football training will be for children in Year 4 and 5 only.

For year 6, Seb  won his race and Bethany came 2nd in the girl's race. The whole team gave their best - well done to everyone.

On Friday 4th March, 2016 St. Mary's boys Year 5 and 6 football team went all the way up to Hornchurch to play in the semi-finals of the Jim Smith Cup against Wykeham. The boys have played extremely well to get this far. Wykeham were a very strong and physical team. We kept it 0-0 until the 24 minute when they scored just before half time. Callum made some amazing saves during the whole game. We battled hard and all the boys gave it their best. The final whistle we lost 5-0 against a top team and the boys should be proud of how far they have come. Many congratulations to Callum, Theo, Finley, Zac, Louis, Ben, Tommy, Liam and Ethan.

This was a very close match and the team were disappointed to go a goal down. However, they showed great perseverance coming back from 1-0 down at half-time and finished the match strongly with Darsey making some key saves and Ellie's fine run and finish. St. Mary's have now won two out of two in the league and our next match is against Heycroft. Fantastic season so far!

Over 60 children from Key Stage 2 competed at the Group 3 Borough Sports at Garons. It was a fantastic afternoon for our school and we were immensely proud of every, single athlete. In the field events, we finished 1st and in the track events 3rd place - most importantly, overall group winners and promotion to Group 2 next year!

A huge thank you to all the children and Mr Abbott who had prepared so tirelessly for the event during their break and lunchtimes. Your preparation clearly made the difference this year. We should also recognise the children who didn't make the final squad as the competition for places ensures that all of our children are performing to the best of their ability.

Children who finished in 1st or 2nd place for their event will be invited to the Super Sports at Garons. Letters will shortly follow to your classes. This will, unfortunately, clash with our Year 5 and 6 residential trips.

A link for the professional photos will be added once we have received the details from the SPSSA.
