Thank you for your continued support during these most unusual of times. Below is the COVID Risk Assessment for both sites which was reviewed last week. I would now like to provide the opportunity for parents to make their contributions to the next review which is due to take place in November with Governors and Staff. Setting the Scene:

 

School re-opening following Coronavirus shutdown and Summer holidays– this risk assessment applies to all children and staff on the Boston Avenue site only with children ranging from Yrs. 2 to 6.

ALL children and staff will now be in attendance according to Government guidelines. The Head teacher, Principal Deputy or Assistant Headteacher will be in attendance at all time that children are in school. In their absence a Senior Teacher will assume main responsibility for supervising staff and pupils.

Catering staff will be in attendance during the school day following their usual hours, including Breakfast and After-school Club.

Cleaning staff may not be available during this time but site staff will be on duty following their usual working pattern.

Pupil will return to usual uniform expectations but on days when they have PE or an after school sports club, they must come in to school wearing PE kit (PE lesson days) or clothes appropriate for the sporting activity (club days).

Existing Control Measures

  1. Class numbers are to return the usual full attendance – two children will share a table sitting side by

        side but facing forward. When sitting in groups to facilitate learning, children must be sat in groups of 4-6.

Each year group will be identified as a ‘bubble’.

  • Allocate children to their own desks when in the room. Class teachers and LSA’s.
  • Display posters to explain the social distancing charter for the children – to include lining up for classroom, toilet, dining hall etc. Hollie Jones
  • Behaviour policy will be updated and regularly reviewed – pupils will be isolated if they cannot adhere to charter or break social distancing rules. SLT
  • Lessons planned for individual work in line with the new curriculum. Year Group Teachers
  • Feedback using interactive whiteboard and visualizer to be used wherever possible. Class Teachers
  • Pregnant women are in the ‘clinically vulnerable’ category and are advised to follow the relevant guidance available for clinically-vulnerable people.
  • Ensure there is a suitable supply of hand sanitizer and soap available in classrooms.  Bins for hand towels and tissues are not left to overflowing – inform teachers to monitor bins and do whatever is possible to keep overflowing to a minimum. Sit staff to monitor from 12.00 p.m. in their absence class teachers.
  • Teachers and LSAs to ensure that everyone washes their hands or sanitizes through the day – at the beginning of the school day, end of break times and before eating. Hand sanitizer can also be used but physically washing hands should be the first choice.
  • Ipads and keyboards to be cleaned after each use by children and staff. Class teachers and LSA’s with anti-bac wipes.
  • Staff will not be required to meet with parents on a one-to-one basis except at Progress Evening which will be held outdoors, weather permitting. 
  • Parents will not be allowed in to the reception area to talk to office staff.  Communication to be through telephone or parent mail.  Office staff will use parent mail to communicate messages with parents wherever possible.
  • Extra-curricular activities will be reinstated, including speech therapists, sports coaches, music coaches etc, following government advice specific to their areas of expertise.
  • Staff to avoid face to face contact and minimize time spent within 2 metre of anyone.
  • Any staff embarking on close distance work with a child, at a distance less than the recommended social distancing guideline, should at the least, wear a protective visor. This should also be used during lunch and playtimes and at the end of the day when seeing children off of the school site. Gloves and other PPE can be worn. Class teachers and LSAs.
  • Pupils who wear face masks to school should remove them safely on arrival at school and store them in a bag (if they are multi-wear) or dispose of safely (if they are single wear). (Teachers and LSAs to encourage safe storage.)
  • Good respiratory hygiene to be practised by all.
  • If any children or staff display COVID symptoms, government guidance will be followed vigilantly.  All members of their household should isolate until a COVID-19 test is taken.  If the symptomatic child or adult is tested negative and they have not been advised to self-isolate then the child or member of staff can return to school.  If a child obtains a positive test, they should self-isolate for at least 10 days.  If somebody in the household tests positive, all other members of the household should self-isolate for 14 days.
  • School will be deep cleaned following any known contamination outbreak. (Site staff to organise)
  • General Gym equipment can be used by small groups but must be cleaned meticulously and frequently between bubbles. Outdoor PE to be encouraged.
  • Outdoor equipment will be sanitized throughout the door.
  • Windows should be opened to promote ventilation: within all indoor spaces including classrooms, office spaces and corridors.
  1. Children to ensure they use the toilets during class time to minimize use during break and lunch times. Toilets and sinks to be allocated to a class via a sign on the door/ over the sink. Class teachers and LSA’s
  • Hot water and soap will be checked on daily basis. Site staff or in absence SLT
  • Hand gel will be provided by entrance/exit to toilet. Site staff or in absence SLT
  • Extra signs displayed to promote good handwashing. Site staff.

  • Using a one way route around the school has been reviewed and is deemed to no longer necessary as year groups are moving through the school at different times, via allocated staircases, and due to the location of the toilets becomes unmanageable and could put the children at more risk.
  • Registers to be completed by 9.15 and sent to the office. Register is closed for each year group 10 minutes after their start time, from which point children are considered to be late.
  • A list of children with food allergens will be displayed in the kitchen office. Catering staff
  • Parents will be reminded of not sending in foods containing nuts, when appropriate, through parent mail. Office staff.
  • Children will need to wash hands before eating along with use of hand gel when they enter the Hall. Class teachers and LSAs.
  • Additional Vomit clean up kits will be provided / located in the upstairs staff room.  Teaching staff and TA’s will be informed of process to contain vomit safely (rather than leave it until cleaner can get into the classroom). Site staff to provide.
  1.  Playtimes will be staggered.  Allocate separate play areas for the year group bubbles.
  • Isolate climbing frames/monkey bars/trail equipment with handrails etc – or handrails and handheld grips can be used and will be cleaned throughout the day.
  • Staff to be vigilant in the playground to actively encourage social distancing of one metre plus where possibleClass teachers and LSAs.
  • Staff will organise games in the playground if necessary, to avoid close contact – tennis, catch, hopscotch, musical statues etc – or collecting things of a ‘Finders’ list. LSAs and MDAs
  • A full set of PPE equipment is available in the First Aid room and should be replaced by the member of staff that has used it after use. LSAs and Teachers
  • Drinking fountains on the playground are out of bounds.  Children to bring in their own named water bottles from home to use in school throughout the day.
  1. Upper phase children will be able to bring in and leave in school one pencil case with the appropriate equipment in.

Trays will be provided for pupils to store their stationery in. 

Resources, such as reading books will be sent home and on return will be stored to one side for at least 72 hours prior to being made available to other pupils. Class teachers and LSAs.

  • Shared resources such as maths items/science equipment will be cleaned with disinfectant each night and left to dry if it leaves the bubble. Class teachers and LSAs.
  • Tables, door handles and other hard surfaces will the cleaned with disinfectant at lunchtime and the end of each day. Site staff / cleaning staff or in their absence class teachers.

6.   Children will be placed in the classroom with their usual class teacher.

      LSAs will need to wear, at the least, face masks if working closely within 2 metres of an individual child. 

       Class teachers and LSAs.

  • All children should return to school but pupils suffering from anxiety may need to have reduced time in school to support their emotional needs.
  • Teaching staff will be allocated adequate time within the first two weeks of return to schooling to allow pupils to talk about their emotional needs, without being pressured into workload. LSAs / Nurture/ Staff Inclusion Team.
  • Teaching staff will be provided with skills and resources to understand emotional needs in order to respond to pupil’s problems with re-adjusting to school life. SLT
  • Cognitive overload will be reviewed during PPA.  Teachers
  • The Safeguarding/Senco Lead will be contactable during the day to step in and assist the teacher when required. MB HJ GL

7.  Online Coaching and training provided for staff in Well Being and emotional stress.

  • Brief catch up each day to ensure staff feel supported. Staff meetings on Wednesdays. SLT available if staff need to talk. SLT
  • Posters displayed in the staff room to include support lines – stress and bereavement counselling SLT
  • A nominated member of staff is available to staff on a daily basis to be contacted to discuss staff concerns.

  • The staff room will be laid out with chairs at one metre distance and staff are encouraged to adhere to distancing guidelines.

8.  Behaviour policy will be updated prior to school reopening.  Any risk of spitting or other behaviour difficulties that require close contact with the child will need an individual risk assessment to be written (or health care plan).

  • Masks to be worn if needed – instructions provided for wearing it properly and for safe removal and disposal.
  • Provision of disposable aprons and extra gloves to continue and to only be used when appropriate. It is the responsibility of the individual member of staff to seek out replacement PPE from the office staff when they have used theirs.
  • Visors to be worn if a staff member is at risk or being exposed to spitting
  • Reduced timetable / exclusion/inclusion considered if necessary, i.e. putting staff member at higher risk of potential contamination.

9.  All surfaces such as handles, toilets, tables, chairs and shared equipment will be cleaned using disinfectant at the end of each day.

  • All cleaning staff will be provided with full PPE and encouraged to use fully: aprons, gloves, masks.
  • If appropriate, soft furnishings will be removed from classrooms – soft toys, carpets, cushions. Class teachers and LSAs.
  • Deep cleaning of classrooms will take place at the end of each week. Cleaners.
  • Staff have been provided with appropriate cleaning products so they can frequently clean their work areas. All staff
  • Classroom and office doors to be open throughout the day as much as possible to encourage ventilation and to minimise the use of these touch-points. All staff.
  • The Hall to be cleaned regularly during lunchtime, with the tables being disinfected. Lunchtime support staff.

10. Two entrances in to the school to be used at start of the day and at the end of day.

               Head teacher will provide authorised parents with a time for drop off and collect their children through Parent mail:

               Yr2: 8.35–3.05 / Yr3: 8.50-3.20 / Yr4: 8.30-3.00 / Yr5: 8.30-3.00 / Yr6: 8.20-2.50

  • Any staff member coming into contact with parents at the reception area of entrance of the school will be provided with disposable gloves and mask.
  • Any member of staff coming into close contact with parents at the end of the school day or outside of the school building should maintain a distance of at least one + metre. Staff seeing children out at the end of the day should wear a visor.
  • Children will have their temperature taken before entry by staff on duty wearing PPE.
  • Parents are to wear face masks on the school site following government directives.
  • No parents to enter inside the school building without preapproved appointment.

11. Ensure there is a medical room available for treatment of sick or injured pupils – have a sink and access to a toilet available that is segregated from general use. This will be the First Aid Room.

  • In the event of a child showing COVID symptoms the First Aid Room will become the isolation room and general first aid will take place in the corridor outside of the school office.
  • Brief all staff in handling basic first aid treatment, such as nose bleeds, issuing asthma inhalers, assisting pupils needing eye drops etc.
  • Anyone who is allocated to carry out first aid treatment will need to be wearing full PPE and have a clear understanding of disposing of discarded materials (such as blood soaked tissues).
  • Hand wash and hand sanitizer will be available in the medical room.
  • Full PPE equipment (visor / mask / apron / gloves) will be in situ for the use of staff providing basic first aid to children. This is kept in the First Aid room and, after use, replaced by the staff member who has used it. LSAs / Teachers.

12.  Staff ratios will return to the usual allocation.

  • Teachers will remain contactable to provide emergency cover in the event of another teacher not being available.  The Head Teacher and SLT will review staffing on a daily basis if teachers and LSA’s call in sick.

13.  Maintenance team will work with the Head Teacher to ensure that staff will be informed of any changes to the fire evacuation route during this time.  If some exit doors are not in use, all staff and pupils will be briefed.

  • Pupils will be informed of which exits are to be used– particularly if pupils are located in a different classroom than they are used to.
  • Pupils will practice the fire alarm drill on returning to school, taking into account social distancing rules whilst lining up in classrooms and also lining up at the assembly point.
  • All staff will be briefed on sweeping the building and isolating the fire control panel – in case Head Teacher or Maintenance Officer is not on the premises during a fire drill.

14.  Staff will be briefed on any changes to safety procedures during the school day. 

  • If the entrance gate is locked, office staff will be vigilant before permitting access by anyone who rings the buzzer.  Only people who have existing appointments will be permitted entrance to the school grounds. Office staff
  • Office staff will be briefed on a daily basis to confirm who is expected to arrive during the school day. Relevant staff.
  • If any members of staff are aware of groups of people loitering outside the school premises, a lockdown will be implemented until the groups dissipate.  In the event that intruders do not leave, the police will be called. SLT

15.  Where visitors to the site can come outside of school hours they should. A record should be kept of all     visitors.

  • Maintenance contractors (essential services to monitor safety functions such as Legionella, gas and fire detection systems) will be permitted into school when pupils are not present.  They must provide a risk assessment to the school prior to attending. Site staff.
  • Where feasible, contractors and professionals will carry out virtual meetings to avoid direct contact with school staff and pupils.
  • Sports coaches and Club Leaders will be permitted to provide coaching for pupils providing they can promote social distancing and follow handwashing guidance through their teaching.
  • Music coaches will be permitted into the school as long as they are using musical instruments that are not breath based, unless they are the child’s own instrument and are not shared. Instruments such as drums or keyboards should be cleaned appropriately between usage with groups of children. Choir and singing activities can take place with a class of children who are positioned facing away from each other in a well-ventilated space.

All staff and children are to return to work as the shielding period has come to an end.

No full school assemblies will be carried out. If children need to be addressed by the Head Teacher or an SLT member, this will be done in each classroom, in the hall with social distancing being observed or in a suitably sized classroom that can accommodate social distancing rules.

 

Parent meetings will be carried out via virtual meetings wherever possibly, including third party consultants/advisors if necessary. Parent / Teacher meeting will take place outside of the school. Class Dojo will be used as a tool to communicate with parents and will be set up before October half term.

 

The staff using the Staff Room will be encouraged to sit in a way that complies with social distancing rules.

The fridge handles in staff room will be washed on daily basis. The staff room will be deep cleaned on weekly basis. Cleaners

The photocopier will be cleaned regularly each day using anti-bacteria wipes. Cleaners

 

Where possible, staff will be asked to bring in their own water bottles rather than to use school drink making facilities.

  • Pupils who wear face masks to school remove when come into school and remove safely on arrival at school and dispose of safely. Non disposable ones need to be placed in a sandwich bag and put in a safe place until the end of the day. Class teacher.

  • If any members of the bubble show symptoms of Coronavirus, the school will consider isolation of 14 days minimum for all members of the school.

  • Masks to be worn if needed – H95 grade and instructions provided for wearing it properly and care for cleaning.
  • Provision of disposable aprons and extra gloves to continue and to only be used when appropriate.
  • Visors to be worn if staff member is at risk or being exposed to spitting
  • Reduced timetable / exclusion/inclusion considered if necessary, i.e. putting staff member at higher risk of potential contamination.

 

 

9.  All surfaces such as handles, toilets, tables, chairs and shared equipment will be cleaned and disinfected at the end of each day.

  • All cleaning staff will wear full PPE: aprons, gloves, masks

10. Two entrances in to the school to be used at start of the day and one at the end of day.

  • Head teacher will provide authorised parents with a time to drop off: 8:40-8:50 am for Reception, 8:50-9:00 am for Year One and 2:35-2:45 pm for Reception and 2:45-2:55 pm for Year One to collect their children. Issue drop off/collection time conveyed to parents through parentmail. Collection on a Friday for Reception 1:45- 2 pm.
  • Any staff member coming into contact with parents at the reception area of entrance of the school will be provided with disposable gloves and mask.
  • Children will have their temperature taken before entry by staff on duty wearing PPE.
  • No parents to enter inside the school site.

 

 

11. Ensure there is a medical room available for treatment of sick or injured pupils – have a sink and access to a toilet available that is segregated from general use.

  • Corridor outside caretakers office to be used for minor First Aid issues.
  • Office for anything more serious.
  • Sick bay to remain isolation room.
  • Brief all staff in handling basic first aid treatment, such as nose bleeds, issuing asthma inhalers, assisting pupils needing eye drops etc.
  • Anyone who is allocated to carry out first aid treatment will need to be wearing gloves and have a clear understanding of disposing of discarded materials (such as blood soaked tissues).
  • Hand wash and hand sanitizer will be available in the medical room.

 

 

12.  Staff ratios will return to normal.

  • Teachers will remain contactable to provide emergency cover in the event of another teacher not being available.  The Head Teacher and SLT will review the rota list on a daily basis if teachers and LSA’s call in sick.

 

 

13.  Maintenance team will work with the Head Teacher to ensure that staff will be informed of any changes to the fire evacuation route during this time.  If some exit doors are not in use, all staff and pupils will be briefed.

  • Pupils will practice the fire alarm drill during the first week of returning to school, taking into account social distancing rules whilst lining up in classrooms and also lining up at the assembly point.
  • All staff will be briefed on sweeping the building and isolating the fire control panel – in case Head Teacher or Maintenance Officer is not on the premises during a fire drill.

 

 

14.  Staff will be briefed on any changes to the lock down procedure during the school day. 

  • If the entrance gate can be locked (entrance buzzer is located here), office staff will be vigilant before permitting access by anyone who rings the buzzer.  Only people who have existing appointments will be permitted entrance. Nancy Harcourt

15.  Where visitors to the site can come outside of school hours, they should. A record should be kept of all visitors.

  • Maintenance contractors (essential services to monitor safety functions such as Legionella, gas and fire detection systems) will be permitted into school when pupils are not present.  Site Staff
  • Where feasible, contractors and professionals will carry out virtual meetings to avoid direct contact with school staff and pupils.
  • Singing activities can take place with a class of children who are positioned facing away from each other.

The following group of people are at high risk:

No full school assemblies will be carried out. If children need to be addressed by the Head Teacher or an SLT member, this will be done in each classroom, in the hall with social distancing being observed or in a suitably sized classroom that can accommodate social distancing rules.

 

Parent meetings will be carried out via virtual meetings wherever possibly, including third party consultants/advisors if necessary. 

 

 

The fridge handles in staff room will be washed on daily basis.  Cleaners

 

Staff will be asked to wash their own crockery and cups after every use so that use of dishwasher is reduced.

 

Hot water, soap, paper towels and hand sanitizer will be available in the staff room.

 

The staff room will be deep cleaned on weekly basis.
