  • Community at the Heart

Why is our vision centred around 'community'?

"St. Mary's means to me a second home but with our friends.  It's my second family." (Lilah, Year 3)

Our vision has 'community' at the heart because it is where our school gains its strength.  Through the support we give to our families, the opportunities we provide our pupils and the relationships we have in the local area, we are focused on the flourishing of everyone.  St. Mary's is a wonderfully vibrant and diverse school and our school is what brings us all together.

Community is important to God because it reflects His nature and purposes for humanity. God encourages us to care for everyone, whether friends or enemies.

The idea of community is inherent within the Trinity itself. God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in perfect unity and love. This divine community serves as a model for human relationships and mutual support.

Humans are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Just as God exists in community within the Trinity, we are designed for relationships and community with each other. Our communal nature reflects God’s nature, fostering unity and interconnectedness.

God recognises the strength and encouragement that come from community.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 highlights the importance of companionship and mutual support, stating, "two are better than one." Through community, individuals find solace, encouragement, and strength to face life's challenges.

God's plan for humanity involves a communal journey. Throughout the Bible, God calls His people to live in community, united in purpose and mission. In Acts 2:42-47, the early Christian community exemplifies this, sharing resources, supporting one another, and spreading hope and salvation.

We must remember the importance of maintaining connections and building a community of love through our words and actions. God did not intend for us to live in isolation; we are designed to thrive in relationships. Community is important to God because it reflects His love, unity, and support. Through community, individuals experience rich relationships, find strength together, and fulfill their purpose.

We are at our best when we experience life's highs and lows with others. Everyone needs community. Being in community allows us to be friends like Barnabas, seek mentors like Paul, and teach others like Timothy. Community is about lifting each other up, learning from one another, and being the friends we all need.

While on earth, Jesus showed us how to build communities bound by a deep sense of belonging and love. God calls us to fellowship with one another on earth, reflecting the fellowship we will have in heaven.

At St. Mary's, these theological roots guide our daily efforts. We believe that a nurturing community provides fertile ground for academic, emotional, and spiritual growth. By embracing diversity, fostering empathy, and promoting collaboration, we empower our children to thrive not only academically but also as compassionate and responsible members of society.

The words of Jeremiah 29:11 resonate deeply with our vision: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you hope and a future." This promise reinforces our commitment to providing a supportive community where each individual is valued, nurtured, and equipped to realise their full potential. Just as God has a plan for His people, we believe that every member of our school community has a purpose, and together, we journey towards a future filled with hope and possibilities.
