Our Curriculum at St. Mary's

Our vision at St. Mary’s is that everyone will flourish within our school community. Each child is loved, supported and given every opportunity to ensure they can reach their full potential. We are an aspirational school; we are uncompromising in our desire to achieve the best in teaching and learning and this is at the centre of how we live and work together, demonstrating our school values in all we do, and how we learn together, with our curriculum being innovative and inspiring.

Our curriculum gives children the opportunity to live out our four core Christian values in the way they learn.  It reflects AMBITION ensuring children are stretched and challenged to learn and achieve well; BELONGING by reflecting the world we live in, representing and valuing different cultures, religions and stories; COURAGE with the development of our children as resilient learners who are proactive in seeking opportunities for growth, demonstrating a willingness to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from failures; and DISCOVERY, giving our children the opportunity to question, challenge, explore and develop a sense of awe and wonder at the ever-changing world, allowing them to consider what faith is to them and to value our local, national and international contexts and communities.

We appreciate and utilise the rich cultural capital on our doorstep. Our curriculum is full of opportunities to enrich the children’s experiences with trips and visitors.  Years 3 to 6 go on a trip to London every year, we visit the beach, the local parks, the woods, local places of worship, the theatre, the cinema, the library and places further afield.

Our curriculum is planned so that we continuously build upon and deepen our prior learning, ensuring we build enough knowledge and understanding to prepare our children for life beyond our school. Our curriculum is based upon the expectations of the national curriculum whilst ensuring there are opportunities for children to experience a broad and rich experience as they grow and develop. We understand that some children may need to take a different journey and will have a different experience due to their own individual needs. We are passionate about being a school that embraces, supports and nurtures difference, and our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children can thrive.

We believe that our curriculum allows children to receive an excellent start to their education journey and leave as children who have flourished, prepared for the adventures of life beyond our school.

Children learn to read at St. Mary's following the DfE validated programme Little Wandle. Please visit the Topic Plans, Homework and Guides section to the left for more information on our curriculum or speak to your child's class teacher.
